DESCRIPTION:
EPW - Covelle & Romilly à Genève (ca 1800), gold and enamel verge fusee in Empire style, 49mm, solid gold OF original pair cases, the outer with fully enameled back panel of gentleman and lady, pastes set along the front bezel, green gold border garlands front and back, the inner bearing crowned "AC" hallmark (see below), KWKS, WED, verge escapement, gilt mvt with pierced & engraved foliate scrolled two-footed balance bridge, s#7064. Gross weight of assembled watch 57.6 dwt (89.5 g). The hallmark challenges identification due to Geneva being annexed by the French Republic in 1798 as capital of the Léman department until 1815, when it joined the Swiss Confederation. Certain exemptions to guaranty marks for items destined for export were in effect from 1807, so there may be a range of karat quality in the two cases, the inner appearing higher than the outer, which has more silver content. The outer contains excellent equation of time paper from Luigi Moschini, Firenze [Florence].
